Geothermal: Installation & Maintenance

Geothermal systems are practically maintenance free and relatively easy to install.

Installation

Most units are easy to install, particularly when they replace another forced-air system. They can be installed in areas unsuitable for fossil fuel furnaces because there is no combustion, thus no need to vent exhaust gases. At your convenience, we will come to measure your house, calculate your heating and cooling requirements, and assess your property to determine the best loop system for your location.

If you own a home that does not have an existing duct system, Sobieski Services technicians can easily retrofit your home with one in order to enjoy geothermal comfort. Make sure to tell us about any existing hard-to-heat or hard-to-cool rooms so these issues can be addressed prior to installation.

Another popular way to use geothermal technology is with in-floor radiant heating, in which hot water circulation through pipes under the floor heats the room.

Maintenance

Like any other heating and cooling system, good maintenance is a key part of getting the most value for your energy dollar. However, geothermal systems are practically maintenance free.

When installed properly, the buried loop will last for generations. And the other half of the operation - the unit's fan, compressor and pump - is housed indoors, protected from the harsh weather conditions.

Usually, periodic professional checks and filter changes are the only required maintenance to ensure that it stays in peak operating condition. An inspection by a Sobieski Services technician will include a visual inspection, refrigerant leak test, evaporator coil cleaning, and a check of the compressor, fan and pump motors. The technician will record operating data in a logbook so a deteriorating condition can be detected easily.

Rarely, a geothermal system may need emergency service. The most common cause of emergency service calls is electrical problems.
