The summer months are upon us again here in the greater Delaware Valley area, and that means sunshine and the great outdoors for the whole family. But it also brings some challenges for your home, with the kids enjoying their summer vacation, friends joining the BBQ in the backyard, and loved ones visiting from afar. This added stress on your plumbing system can lead to accelerated wear and tear, so we wanted to help you avoid some common summer plumbing issues.

Sewer Line Backups

Sewer line backups often occur as a result of foreign objects being flushed down the toilet, grease buildup in your pipes, or tree roots finding their way into your underground plumbing. Getting your sewers serviced before the summer storms are in full swing will help avoid a lot of the damage.

Clogged Toilets

It’s simple: More people means more toilet usage. With the kids on summer break, they can be home during hours they are normally at school, increasing the chances of that dreadful toilet water rise. Have a sit down discussion with your little (or not so little) ones about only using a few squares of toilet paper, and what should and shouldn’t get flushed. And make sure a plunger is with reach for all your bathrooms! For more serious issues, make sure you have the number for your local plumbing specialist on hand.

Clogged Garbage Disposal

Does your family love an old fashioned backyard barbeque? Is your home the gathering place for all your friends on a nice summer evening? More food moving in and out of the kitchen can wreak havoc on your disposal. Be careful not to put rinds and coffee grinds down the disposal, as well as avoiding oil and grease. If a clog does develop, or you notice that your sink is draining slower than normal, a combination of vinegar and boiling water can often help clear it up. When that doesn’t do the trick, drain service may be in order.

Washing Machine Leaks

Getting out grass stains from jeans and the smoke smell on your sweatshirt from the campfire will put your washing machine to work. Keep an eye on the hoses, and make sure there are no leaks that could lead to a flooding situation. If your old rubber hose is looking worse for wear, spend the extra money on the stainless steel hoses so you can rest easy for many summers to come. It’s worth it!
